Russia more than doubles strawberry imports in March
In March 2014, Russia's imports of strawberries were 2.3 times of those registered in February 2014, according to the official statistics.
Russia imported 4,500 tons of strawberries in the first month of spring 2014 against 1,600 tons of imports a month before. However, compared with the same month of the previous year, imports changed slightly.
Meanwhile, Russia's cumulative imports of strawberries over the first three months of the year 2014 reached just 6,700 tons, a decrease of 11% year-on-year.
The EU countries traditionally led in strawberry exports to the Russian Federation with the EU accounting for about 81% of Russia's total imports and followed by Egypt and China. It should also be noted that imports usually peak in May-June with maximal shipments being registered from Greece and Turkey.
We would remind you that Russia imported 55,500 tons of strawberries in 2013 with Greece, Turkey and Poland as major suppliers. Meanwhile, Ukraine exported just 168 tons to Russia that enabled the country to rank just 16th among largest exporters to the Russian Federation. Will Ukraine manage to expand its presence in the Russian strawberry market in 2014? This and many other questions will be answered at the 5th International Conference “Berries of Ukraine-2014: Frozen Produce & Fresh Market” that is to take place on May 22-23, 2014, Feride Plaza, Vinnytsia, Ukraine.
