Ukrainian fresh produce price index up due to rainy weather
Fruit-Inform Ukrainian fresh produce price index went up by 2.2% in the week from May 24th to 30th for the first time over the past month and a half, after a decrease of 5% a week before.
“The end of May is a traditional period of “season interchange”, when early vegetables oust last year's crop from the market, greenhouse vegetables become more affordable, and strawberries and sweet cherries start taking a leading position in the fruit market”, says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. “However, some price jumps are possible in this period during worsening weather conditions that was corroborated last week. Worse weather resulted in lower outputs of greenhouse vegetables and a decrease in the berry supply meaning their higher prices”.
Rainy weather led to an increase of 10.4% in prices of greenhouse vegetables last week. Sweet cherries became 11.1% more expensive. Despite a seasonal trend, strawberry prices did not fall last week. Apples also make their contribution to the price growth: their prices went up by 20% due to lower stocks of high-quality produce.
At the same time, banana prices decreased as consumers switched over to seasonal fruits (sweet cherries and strawberries). Early cabbage also became slightly less expensive. However, last year's cabbage was still available in the market partially due to relatively high prices of early produce.
