Ukraine: vegetable crops in Kherson Region seriously suffered from bad weather

Heavy rains with hail and cold weather negatively affect vegetable plantations in the southern regions of Ukraine (Kherson Region in particular). According to Fruit-Inform, pouring rains have fully washed away vegetable plantations. Farmers have also reported of heavy damages to plants (tomatoes especially) from hail. The largest damages are registered in Kakhovka District, where some farmers have lost the majority of their vegetable plantations. However, damages in other Districts are of less significant scale.

Furthermore, growers are seriously concerned about spread of diseases that cannot be stopped or localized due to incessant rains. For example, farmers from many southern regions say of quick spread of mildew and early blight on the white cabbage and onion plantations, and some tomato fields have seriously suffered from late blight.

Fruit-Inform analysts believe that the situation can significantly affect the supply and prices of field-grown vegetables in Ukraine, as the majority of them are produced in the southern regions. For example, only Kherson Region accounts for the share of about 25% in Ukraine's total production of field-grown tomatoes and 17% in production of onions.

We would remind you that more detailed information about the Ukrainian fruit and vegetable production prospects is available in the the fundamental study «Fruit & Vegetable Market of Ukraine-2014: Results and Forecasts for the Next Season».
