Ukraine: Crimean apple production more than doubles over past 5 years

The Crimean apple production has increased by 180% over the past 5 years, according to the official statistics.

It should be noted that areas under apple orchards have been annually decreasing by 5% in Crimea since 2008 due to old orchards grubbing rates higher than setting out new ones.

Thus, a sharp increase in production was registered thanks to higher yields that had more than tripled over the past 5 years. The trend was especially appreciable in the past 3 years when new intensive orchards were coming into bearing.

At the same time, Crimean apple growers are now seriously concerned about the sector development in the peninsula under conditions of lack of water supply that is critical for intensive orchards.
