Ukraine: onion imports in 2013/14 50 times as high as in previous season
According to Fruit-Inform, Ukraine's imports of onions in the season 2013/14 were 50 times as high as in the previous season.
Ukraine imported 33,000 tons of onions, the highest result over the previous 4 seasons, against just 659 tons a season before.
Poland, Turkey and Egypt were the largest exporters of onions to Ukraine in 2013/14, and Poland's share in Ukraine's total imports amounted to 64%.
A sharp increase in onions imports is connected with a fall in domestic production of this crop due to lower areas and a decrease in yields because of unfavorable weather conditions registered in Ukraine.
Ukraine's imports peaked in April-May, when onion prices reached historic high in the country. Ukrainian growers' stocks were minimal already in the mid-April, while the demand for onions was rather high.
Furthermore, Ukraine for the first time ever became the largest importer of Russian onions in the season 2013/14. More detailed information about the Eastern European onion market developments will be presented at the 7th International Conference «Fruit & Vegetable Business of Russia-2014», which is to be held on September 16, in conjunction with the largest food exhibition in Russia WorldFood Moscow 2014.
