Russia: bananas at least 50% more expensive than last year
According to Fruit-Inform, banana prices have grown by at least 50% in Russia compared with the previous year.
An increase in prices is connected with higher price levels in Ecuador, which is the leader in banana exports to the Russian Federation.
A significant part of the banana crop was lost in Colombia due to storm in the mid-summer. Furthermore, banana growers in the Philippines also said of a decrease in production due to mass spread of fungus diseases.
Those events immediately led to higher demand for Ecuadorian bananas. Ecuador has already managed to raise shipments of bananas for export by at least 25% since the beginning of the year, and exporters are sure that the export volumes will most likely reach record high in this season.
For the present, bananas are offered at RUB 41-44/kg (USD 1.09-1.17/kg) in Russia, an increase of 50-100% year-on-year, and prices keep on growing.
More detailed information about the trends in the Russian market for imported fruits will be presented at the 7th International Conference «Fruit & Vegetable Business of Russia-2014», which is to be held on September 16, in conjunction with the largest food exhibition in Russia WorldFood Moscow 2014.
