Ukraine: devaluation of hryvnia results in significant increase in lemon prices

According to Fruit-Inform, prices of lemons are still higher year-on-year in Ukraine despite the start of imports from Turkey.

First shipments of Turkish lemons arrived in Ukraine last week, and fruits were offered at UAH 23-30/kg (USD 1.57-2.05/kg). For comparison, remaining quantities of Argentinean lemons were sold at UAH 35-38/kg (USD 2.39-2.59/kg).

However, despite that, lemon prices are still twice as high as in the same period of the previous season. We would remind you that lemons were offered at no higher than UAH 17/kg (USD 1.16/kg) in late September 2013.

Such an increase in prices is connected with the devaluation of the Ukrainian hryvnia, which exchange rate has gone down by 60% over a year.

We would remind you that Turkey, Argentina and South Africa were the main suppliers of lemons to Ukraine in the previous season. Turkey's share in Ukraine's total lemon imports amounted to about 75%.
