Third week of fresh produce price growth in Ukraine

Fruit-Inform Ukrainian fresh produce price index went up by 11% in the second week of November. As a result, fresh fruits and vegetables have become 23.8% more expensive in Ukraine over the past three weeks.

«An increase in the fresh produce price index was registered due to growth in cucumber and tomato prices as well as a slight rise in prices of imported fruits last week», says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. «At the same time, prices of traditional vegetables kept on going down: they became 3.9% less expensive week-on-week».

A decrease in prices of traditional vegetables and the devaluation of the Ukrainian hryvnia puts Ukrainian vegetable production prospects at threat in 2015, as growers can face lack of funds for sowing campaign. Farmers can also hardly count on credits due to difficult situation in the Ukrainian banking sector. Exports might be the only way out, but they are not high now despite relatively low prices, due to excessive supply of domestic vegetables in the majority of European countries.
