Bananas lose ground to apples in Ukrainian market
Banana prices have been going down in the Ukrainian market for the second week in a row due to currently low consumption of those fruits, according to Fruit-Inform.
For the present, suppliers are ready to ship bananas at UAH 15-16/kg (USD 0.95-1.02/kg), a decrease of 9-12% compared with the previous week, when prices were not lower than UAH 17/kg (USD 1.08/kg).
Fruit-Inform analysts note that Ukrainians still prefer domestic apples, which are more affordable for them compared with bananas. Furthermore, it is apples and bananas that are the main competitors in Ukrainians' fruit consumption structure.
Negative performance in banana imports also confirms a decrease in banana consumption in Ukraine. As Fruit-Inform has already informed, Ukraine imported just 31,000 tons of bananas in the first two months of the current season, a fall of 23% year-on-year due to relatively high prices of them connected with the devaluation of the Ukrainian hryvnia.
More detailed information about the Ukrainian fruit and vegetable market developments and outlook will be presented at the 11th International Conference «Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine-2014», which is going to be held on December 8-9 in Kiev. The conference will be followed by the 4th International Trade Forum with about 30 Ukrainian retail chains and importers ready to conduct negotiations with fruit and vegetable suppliers on December 10.
