Prices of traditional vegetables and potatoes up in Ukrainian supermarkets

Ukrainian supermarkets have been raising prices of traditional vegetables (onions, white cabbage, table beets, carrots) and potatoes. According to Fruit-Inform, those products have already become 10-15% more expensive since the beginning of this week.

The price growth is connected with an increase in households' demand for traditional vegetables and potatoes. A cold spell has resulted in interruption of unregulated food markets' operations and a significant fall in the supply at wholesale markets; therefore, trade mainly switched over to stores and supermarket chains.

It should be noted that growers also had to raise their selling prices simultaneously with an increase in retail prices. Many farmers stopped selling due to frosts; others have been raising their prices in view of worse logistics and higher transportation costs.

More detailed information about the Ukrainian fruit and vegetable market developments and outlook will be presented at the 11th International Conference «Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine-2014», which is going to be held on December 8-9 in Kiev. The conference will be followed by the 4th International Trade Forum with about 30 Ukrainian retail chains and importers ready to conduct negotiations with fruit and vegetable suppliers on December 10.
