Russia: Rosstat underreports real vegetable price growth
Fruit-Inform analysts have been regularly reporting of a steady increase in vegetable prices in Russia. In the mid-January, the Federal State Statistics Service of the Russian Federation (Rosstat) has also said of a positive trend in the vegetable market, but underreported the real price growth rates.
According to Rosstat, white cabbages have become 1.1% more expensive since the beginning of 2014, onion prices have gone up by 7.7%, and prices of tomatoes, carrots and potatoes have grown by 6.7%, 6.3% and 5.3%, respectively.
At the same time, Fruit-Inform daily price monitoring shows an increase of 20% in white cabbage, carrot prices, and 30% - in onion ones over past two weeks. Prices of greenhouse cucumbers and tomatoes have grown by 50% and 35%, respectively.
Rosstat officers do not explain such a sharp increase in prices, while Fruit-Inform analysts connect it with the price growth in the segment of imported produce due to the devaluation of the Russian ruble and Russia's ban on imports from the EU and Ukraine.
