Russia: growers intensify onion sales

According to Fruit-Inform, Russian farmers have started more active sales of their onion stocks. As a result, onion prices have stabilized in the market for the first time since the beginning of the year.

Growers did not hurry with sales last week in the hope of a further increase in prices, but intensified sales this week due to worsening quality of their onions. Farmers and wholesale companies regularly report of decreasing quality of stocks and more problems with sales of those onions.

A sharp increase in the supply has immediately affected prices, which have been growing since the beginning of the year. Now farmers prefer to maintain their price levels and some are ready to make price concessions to large buyers.

Current prices vary between RUB 24-27/kg (USD 0.33-0.37/kg), an increase of 50% week-on-week. It should also be noted that the supply of Ukrainian onions (shipped to Russia through Crimea) has significantly gone down this week.

More detailed information about the Eastern European onion market will be presented at the 7th International Conference «Potatoes & Vegetables of Ukraine-2015», which will be held on February 27, 2015, Kiev, Ukraine.
