Ukraine: fresh produce price index sharply grows after three weeks of decline
Fruit-Inform fresh produce price index went up by 9.4% in the week from March 27th to April 4th, after a decrease of 8.3% a week before. As a result, negative price performance observed in Ukraine over the previous three weeks changed into growth. Nevertheless, fruit and vegetable prices went down by 10.8% over the past four weeks.
«All fresh produce categories (except potatoes) became more expensive last week», says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. «Greenhouse vegetables made the largest contribution to growth in the fresh produce price index, and their prices increased due to worse weather conditions in Ukraine».
Traditional vegetables became 6.7% more expensive thanks to an increase in prices of white cabbage and carrots. The market participants also said of stabilization in onion prices, which had been previously going down. Red beets remained the least expensive category among all traditional vegetables.
Fruit prices were stable in the majority of cases, except for oranges and mandarins, which had become more expensive due to a fall in their shipment volumes.
As a result, Fruit-Inform analysts expect a seasonal factor to impact the Ukrainian fruit and vegetable market in a week, when early vegetables will be available together with last year's crops, and consumers will be gradually moving to buying early produce. Such a period is usually characterized by significant fresh produce price fluctuations.
