Ukraine: apple imports grow tenfold year-on-year in January

Ukraine's imports of apples have grown tenfold in January 2015 compared with the same month of the previous year. According to the official statistics, the import volumes totaled 6,500 tons against slightly more than 600 tons in January 2014.

Ukraine's cumulative apple imports over the period from July 2014 to January 2015 totaled 22,000 tons, six times as high as registered a season before, with Poland accounting for the largest share.

It should be noted that Ukraine's apple imports have grown against a background of a sharp fall in consumption of imported produce in the country. The market analysts believe that the largest part of imported apples was then re-exported to Russia through Crimea. The demand for imported apples was rather low in the country due to high prices: prices of Polish apples have more than doubled year-on-year in Ukraine.
