Ukrainian growers start exporting strawberries

Owners of summer greenhouses have started harvesting first strawberries in Ukraine in early May, according to Fruit-Inform.

Now Crimean middlemen purchase Ukrainian strawberries at UAH 140-150/kg (USD 5.79-6.20/kg) and then ship them to Russia. As a result, the current Ukrainian strawberry export season will most likely be characterized both by record early start and record high export volumes.

In the previous seasons Ukrainian growers reported of the start of exports in early June. Exports in May were registered only in 2012 and totaled just 3 tons. It should also be noted that Ukraine's cumulative exports of strawberries totaled record high 184 tons in 2012.

Russia was the only target market for Ukrainian strawberries of export quality.

More detailed information about the Ukrainian berry market developments and outlook will be presented at the 6th International Conference «Berries of Ukraine-2015: Frozen Produce & Fresh Market». The conference will be held on May 21-22, 2015, Kiev, Ukraine.
