Ukraine: fresh produce price index slightly up during May holidays
Fruit-Inform Ukrainian fresh produce price index has grown by 0.6% over two previous weeks (April 30 through May 8), after an increase of 2.9% during the pre-holiday week. At the same time, the fresh fruit and vegetable market segments were characterized by bidirectional price trends, which almost compensated each other.
«Growth in the fresh produce price index was registered mainly thanks to an increase of 7.9% in tomato prices in view of low supply of imported produce», says Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform. «A rise in tomato prices was not compensated even by a further decrease in cucumber prices registered due to relatively high internal market demand for cucumbers».
Growth in red beet prices should also be noted; however, red beets remained the least expensive fresh vegetable category in the Ukrainian market. At the same time, onion prices somewhat went down due to the supply of onions still prevailing over the demand for them. Potatoes also remained the least expensive fresh produce category in the market.
Strawberries became the most expensive fresh produce category, and their season started during the May holidays. Their prices have averaged UAH 130/kg (EUR 5.66/kg) in the beginning of the season, which is enough to buy about 72 kg of potatoes now in Ukraine. However, strawberry prices are expected to sharply fall in the nearest time. In general, the fresh fruit price index slightly went down due to lower prices of bananas and oranges. At the same time, prices of apples grew in view of their decreasing supply in the Ukrainian market.
