Ukraine almost doubles apple imports in March 2015

Despite record high production of apples in Ukraine in 2014, the country keeps on actively raising imports of those fruits, which have almost doubled year-on-year in March 2015.

According to the official statistics, Ukraine imported slightly more than 14,000 tons of apples in March this year against reaching just 8,000 tons in the same month of the previous season.

Ukraine's cumulative imports of apples over the period from July 2014 to March 2015 totaled 46,000 tons, four times as high as in the same period of the season 2013/14, with almost all volumes being imported from Poland and Moldova.

The market analysts connect such a sharp rise in Ukraine's apple imports with large volumes of re-exports of those fruits to Russia through Crimea taking into account the fact of a significant fall in consumption of imported apples in Ukraine in view of the devaluation of the national currency there.
