Ukraine: growers' sales of fresh market apples to processors reach record high in 2014
Ukrainian growers' sales of fresh market apples to processors have reached record high in 2014. According to Fruit-Inform, Ukrainian processors have raised their apple purchase volumes by 20-25% year-on-year. Such estimates are also confirmed by the official statistical data: in October-November 2014, Ukrainian processing enterprises have increased their production of apple juice concentrate by 50% compared with the same period of the previous season.
The market analysts connect larger share of apple sales for processing with serious losses incurred by orchards due to a cold spell in October 2014. As a result, growers were forced to sell up to 30% of their fresh market apple crop to processors. Moreover, processors' purchase prices took just a third – a fourth of purchase price levels fixed by fresh market middlemen.
This factor has also supported prices of fresh market apples in the second half of the season. We would remind you that prices of Ukrainian fresh apples have more than tripled over the period from October 2014 to April 2015.
