Moldovan growers expect lower apple production this year

Moldovan growers expect a decrease in apple production this year.

Pessimistic expectations are based on unfavorable weather conditions registered in winter and spring. According to growers, orchards have especially suffered from drought in the end of 2014 and insufficient precipitation during fruit setting. Weather was also rather cold during blossoming and affected pollination.

At the same time, Mr. Iurie Fala, Executive Director at Moldova-Fruct Association, considers growers' pessimistic expectations soonish, as, according to him, a decrease in apple yields due to unfavorable weather conditions may be compensated by new orchards coming into bearing.

«State support and relatively high demand for Moldovan apples in the external market back expansion of areas under apple orchards», he says. «Indeed, weather conditions were difficult in this season, but these losses can be compensated by new plantations coming into bearing».

We would remind you that more detailed information about the Eastern European apple market developments will be presented at the 5th International Conference «Apple Business of Ukraine-2015», which is going to take place on August 13-14, Kleopatra Hotel, Kamyanets-Podilskyi, Ukraine.
