Ukraine: prices of early potatoes a third lower than last year
Prices of early potatoes have already fallen by a third year-on-year in Ukraine, according to Fruit-Inform. Moreover, farmers say of intensifying negative price trend in the market despite stable potato exports to Russia.
For the present, growers have to revise their prices due to abundant supply in the internal market and rather moderate demand shown by local wholesalers and exporters. Now farmers are ready to ship early potatoes at UAH 3-4/kg (USD 0.13-0.27/kg), and prices of produce of small size often reach UAH 2/kg (USD 0.09/kg). Export-quality potatoes are offered at UAH 5-6/kg (USD 0.23-0.28/kg); however, the demand in Russia, previously the largest export market for Ukrainian potatoes, remains extremely low.
Fruit-Inform analysts connect lack of active demand for Ukrainian early potatoes in the internal market and outside of the country with large transit stocks of last year's produce both in Ukraine and Russia.
