White cabbage prices down in Ukraine
White cabbage prices have been going down in Ukraine since the previous week, when they reached record high, according to Fruit-Inform.
A significant jump in prices in the second half of August provoked a fall in the demand for Ukrainian white cabbage and resulted in a decrease in its prices this week. Supermarket chains and wholesalers were forced either to reduce their purchase volumes, or even stop purchasing at all due to a fall in retail sales and lack of free volumes in farms.
This week farmers from the southern regions reported of more active harvesting of middle-late varieties; therefore, the supply started growing, and prices began to gradually go down under conditions of moderate demand. Current maximum prices are not higher than UAH 5.50/kg (USD 0.25/kg), while a week before prices reached UAH 5.50-6.50/kg (USD 0.25-0.29/kg). Moreover, the wholesale market operators are sure that farmers will keep on reducing prices to boost their sales.
Despite a fall in prices, they are still the highest over all history of independent Ukraine. Previous record high levels were registered just in harvestless 2010, but, nevertheless, they took just a half of current ones.
