Crimea, Ukraine: cucumber prices up by a third over weekend
Prices of greenhouse cucumbers keep on growing in Crimea, Ukraine. According to Fruit-Inform price monitoring, cucumbers have become averagely a third more expensive there over the past weekend.
Now long smooth cucumbers are offered at RUB 50-60/kg (USD 0.74-0.89/kg) at Simferopol Wholesale Market against no higher than RUB 50/kg (USD 0.74/kg) in the end of the previous week. Sellers are also ready to ship short cucumbers at RUB 80-95/kg (USD 1.19-1.41/kg), an increase of 33-36% compared with the end of the past week.
The market participants connect such a sharp rise in prices with rather limited supply of produce against a background of high demand. Farms' outputs have significantly decreased due to worsened weather conditions, while shipments from mainland Ukraine are blocked.
It should be noted that current cucumbers prices are also significantly higher year-on-year. Prices of long smooth cucumbers have grown by 15% year-on-year, while the price levels of short produce have almost doubled. Moreover, the majority of the Crimean market participants expect positive price trend to remain in effect under conditions of Crimea blockade in Ukraine.
