Ukrainian wholesalers to keep unsold imported onions in storage until early winter
Ukrainian wholesalers plan to keep imported onions in storage in the hope of sales at higher prices in December, according to Fruit-Inform.
As we have earlier informed, Ukrainian importers reported of a large shipment of Polish onions last week, and, despite shortage of supply in the Ukrainian market, sellers faced problems with sales of imported produce due to its low quality. Some suppliers had to reduce their prices to UAH 7.00-7.50/kg (EUR 0.28-0.29/kg); however, the majority of them decided to stop sales in the hope of an increase in prices in the nearest time.
At the same time, growers and wholesale companies with large stocks of Ukrainian onions also started selling this week due to rapidly worsening quality: some companies' losses of onions in storage have already amounted to 10-20%. Sellers fix prices at UAH 8.50-9.00/kg (EUR 0.33-0.37/kg); however, real prices are not higher than UAH 7-8/kg (EUR 0.28-0.32/kg). In other words, onions have become 10-15% less expensive over the past week.
