Berry sector rather promising for Georgian farmers
The berry sector is rather promising for Georgian farmers, said Mr. Jeremy Darby, International Berry Market Expert, at Georgia Agro Forum-2015.
«Georgia has rather favorable climatic conditions and rich soil, which enable rural population to successfully grow berry and fruit crops», said Mr. Darby. «The berry sector is rather attractive especially for small farmers in Georgia».
The berry production development is backed by high demand for berries in the global market, which has been growing year by year.
«Berries have become a real trend in the global market in the recent years. Berry consumption has been annually growing in the majority of countries, as more and more people prefer a healthy lifestyle and increase the share of berries in their diet», said Mr. Darby.
According to him, strawberries, raspberries and blueberries are now in the highest demand in the global market.
«At the same time, it should be noted that supermarket chains are the main berry sales channel in the majority of countries. For example, about 85% of all berries are sold through retailers in the UK», he added.
