Ukrainian growers to expand areas under white cabbage, carrots and onions in 2016
Ukrainian growers' interest in production of onions, white cabbage and carrots has significantly grown due to their high prices; therefore, the market analysts expect an increase in areas under those crops in 2016, said Ms. Tetiana Getman, Head of Fruit-Inform, at the 12th International Conference «Fruits & Vegetables of Ukraine-2015. «All seed companies surveyed by us have fixed an increase in sales of white cabbage, onion and carrot seeds, which means that areas under these crops will expand in 2016», she said.
And, despite all risks, white cabbage remains one of the most interesting crops for growers.
«White cabbage is one of the most risky crops for production, and its prices significantly fluctuate from year to year. However, relatively low production costs and current market prices of white cabbage have again attracted growers' attention», Ms. Getman added.
Mr. Andriy Yarmak, Economist at the FAO Investment Center, said that such a high interest in white cabbage growing had been traditionally observed among Ukrainian growers. At the same time, having taken a decision to produce white cabbage, growers forget to solve the sales question, which is one of their main problems.
«Such a situation is registered in Ukraine averagely every three years, when high prices and shortage of supply back investments in the white cabbage segment. The white cabbage sector entry threshold is rather low, and newcomers use large areas of 100-300 ha for production with no idea of further possible produce tonnage, storage facilities and sales channels», he said.
