Ukraine more than halves apple imports in January 2016
Ukraine has more than halved apple imports in January 2016 compared with the same month of the previous year, according to Fruit-Inform.
The import volumes totaled just 3,000 tons against reaching 6,600 tons in January 2015.
Ukraine's cumulative imports of apples in the period from July 2015 to January 2016 totaled slightly less than 5,000 tons, a fall of 76% compared with the import volumes registered in the same period of the previous season (21,000 tons).
Almost all volumes of apples imported by Ukraine were of the EU origin, and Poland accounted for 96% of Ukraine's total imports.
The sector experts connect such a considerable fall in imports with rather high supply of domestic apples in Ukraine. Moreover, Ukrainian apples are offered at significantly lower prices than imported produce, and this fact additionally backs the demand for local fruits. Now Ukrainian growers are ready to ship their apples at UAH 5.50-12.00/kg (EUR 0.18-0.40/kg), depending on variety and quality, while imported produce is offered at UAH 10/kg (EUR 0.33/kg) and higher.
