Crimea: cucumber prices down by a third over weekend
The Crimean cucumber market is still characterized by negative price trend. According to Fruit-Inform, cucumber prices have decreased by another third over the past weekend.
For the present, gherkins are offered at RUB 20-25/kg (USD 0.30-0.37/kg) at Krymskiy Privoz Wholesale Market, Simferopol, a decrease of 58-60% over a week. Wholesale prices of long smooth cucumbers now vary between RUB 10-15/kg (USD 0.15-0.22/kg), just a third of prices fixed a week before.
Negative price trend is connected with a sharp rise in the supply of cucumbers in the peninsula, as farms’ outputs have significantly grown thanks to favorable weather conditions. In addition, Crimean wholesalers actively buy produce in Krasnodar Krai of Russia, and this fact also exerts pressure on pricing in the local market under conditions of abundant supply.
It should be noted that current prices of long smooth cucumbers are similar to those fixed a year before, while gherkins have become 20-25% less expensive.
