Cucumber prices almost double in Crimea over weekend
Wholesale prices of cucumbers have sharply grown in Crimea over the past weekend, according to Fruit-Inform.
Long smooth produce is now offered at RUB 35-40/kg (USD 0.53-0.61/kg) at Krymskiy Privoz Wholesale Market, Simferopol, an increase of 70% compared with the end of the past week. Prices of gherkins have grown by 60% and now vary between RUB 60-70/kg (USD 0.91-1.07/kg).
The Crimean market participants connect a rise in prices with lower supply of produce and rather high demand. Many growers have finished their season of cucumbers grown in summer greenhouses. Meanwhile, outputs of field-grown produce are still rather low, and the supply of high-quality cucumbers is limited. According to sellers, prices could have grown even more significantly if not for shipments of field-grown cucumbers from Krasnodar Krai.
It should also be noted that current prices of cucumbers have already grown 2.3 times in the Crimean peninsula year-on-year.
