Cucumber prices down in Crimea

Sellers at Crimean wholesale markets have been reducing their cucumber prices, according to Fruit-Inform.

Long smooth cucumbers have become averagely 14% less expensive at Krymskiy Privoz Wholesale Market, Simferopol, over the past weekend. Now their prices vary between RUB 30-40/kg (USD 0.45-0.60/kg). Prices of gherkins have fallen more significantly and now stand at RUB 30-60/kg (USD 0.45-0.91/kg) against no lower than RUB 50/kg (USD 0.75/kg).

The market operators connect negative price trend with several factors. In the first instance, a decrease in prices is backed by lower demand due to positive price trend a week before. Moreover, the supply of produce has grown in the Crimean market, and this fact also exerts pressure on prices.

Meanwhile, it should be noted that cucumber prices are still significantly higher year-on-year in Crimea. Prices of gherkins are 60% higher than those fixed a year before, and long smooth cucumbers are offered at prices 2.2-2.5 times as high.
