Onion prices sharply down since beginning of this week
Sellers at Ukrainian wholesale markets are forced to continue to reduce their onion prices, according to Fruit-Inform.
The sharpest decrease in prices is now observed at Pochatok Wholesale Market, Odessa. Current prices vary between UAH 3-5/kg (EUR 0.10-0.17/kg), a decrease of 17-19% week-on-week.
Prices at Stolychnyi Wholesale Market, Kiev, went down by 10% and vary between UAH 3.00-3.80/kg (EUR 0.10-0.13/kg), depending on quality.
Meanwhile, sellers at Nezhdanna Wholesale Market, Kherson Oblast, offer their onions at UAH 2.40-3.10/kg (EUR 0.08-0.10/kg), a decrease of 7% compared with the end of the previous week.
The market analysts connect negative price trend with lower trading activity in the Ukrainian onion market. Meanwhile, the supply of produce is rather high, and, in the first instance, farmers try to sell early and middle-season varieties, which are unsuitable for long-term storage.
It should also be noted that onion prices quoted at Ukrainian wholesale markets have already fallen by 30% year-on-year, and the market participants do not expect the situation to improve in the nearest time.
