Kazakhstan almost halves imports of potatoes and traditional vegetables in 2015/16
Kazakhstan has significantly reduced imports of potatoes and traditional vegetables in the season 2015/16. According to Fruit-Inform, the import volumes fell by 44% year-on-year.
Kazakhstan imported 207,700 tons of potatoes and traditional vegetables in the season 2015/16, almost half as high as a season before, when imports had totaled 374,800 tons.
The most significant fall in imports was registered in the segment of ware potatoes. Their imports fell by 84% (from 64,700 tons to 10,100 tons) mainly due to a sharp decrease in imports from Pakistan (down 97% year-on-year).
Carrot imports went down by 71% and amounted to just 19,000 tons. Negative trend was connected with lower imports from Kyrgyzstan. For comparison, Kazakhstan’s imports of carrots from Kyrgyzstan totaled 19,000 tons in the season 2015/16 against 43,000 tons a season before.
Table beet imports were 62% lower and fell from 14,400 tons to 5,600 tons. Uzbekistan was a traditional leader in exports to Kazakhstan with the share of 80%.
Meanwhile, Kazakhstan’s cabbage imports were 60% lower, and onion imports went down by 6%.
