Rapid growth in watermelon prices in Ukraine
Watermelon prices have rapidly grown and averagely doubled in Ukraine over the past week, according to Fruit-Inform.
Now growers are selling their watermelons at UAH 1.50-2.30/kg (EUR 0.05-0.08/kg), while a week before prices did not exceed UAH 1.30/kg (EUR 0.04/kg).
The Ukrainian watermelon market participants connect a rise in prices with growing demand for produce and a decrease in its supply due to worse weather conditions. Firstly, the watermelon crop has seriously suffered from heat in the majority of Ukrainian southern regions. Secondly, some growers from Kherson Oblast reported of hailstorms
It should also be noted that current prices of Ukrainian watermelons are 50-100% higher year-on-year and have already reached at least 5-year high.
