Illyichevsk port expands grain shipping capacities

Illyichevsk trading seaport is about to finish the construction of the third (the last) line of grain elevator as a constituent part of the specialised shipment complex. The present one-time storage capacity - 140,000 tonnes - will be enlarged to 200,000 tonnes, which will rank the port's elevator the biggest among the Black Sea grain shipping facilities.

The present shipment capacity of the complex is 5 million tonnes per year. Commissioning of the third line, which is scheduled for October 2004, will bring it up to 8 million tonnes.

The construction is aimed at Ukrainian grain exports, as well as Kazakhstan and Russian transits. Putting the third line into operation will make it possible for the port to accumulate cargos for Panamax-size vessel. At the moment the two 200-metre long and 11.5-metre deep berths allow simultaneously loading two vessels of up to 60,000-tonne tonnage at the rate of 900 tonnes per hour. There plans are to deepen the berths up to 14 metres for maintenance of 100,000-tonne vessels.

The project sponsor is "Estron Corporation Ltd" (Cyprus); the total worth of the investments is about $15 million.
