The carrot overproduction is observed in Poltava oblast

Owing to the excessive carrot supply the price on this commodity started to go down violently this week; it is partially caused by impossibility of long-term carrot storage for the major part of Poltava oblast producers. The other factor that influenced the prices was a high yield of carrot observed this year on the farmer fields in Poltava oblast. This information is provided by Yuriy Konyaev, Market Information Specialist, Poltava AMP (Agricultural Marketing Project) office. As he said, during one and a half weeks retail price on carrot has decreased on 20-40%. Wholesale prices are decreasing too, however, by slower rates. The producers' expectations that processors would purchase large volumes of carrot on a favorable price have not come up to.

At present moment carrot is supplied by producers on USD $ 0.06-0.13/kg. The major part of supplies is within the limits of USD $ 0.09-0.1/kg, still weekly the quantity of supplies on minimum prices is growing, and vice versa, supplies on maximum prices are decreasing. Poltava oblast farmers are in better situation than carrot producers in Lviv or Volyn oblasts, cause they are not so remote from the main consumption centers, which are Donetsk, Lugansk and Dnepropetrovsk oblasts, Kyiv and AR Crimea.

According to Agricultural Marketing Project evaluation, the self-cost of carrot production varies within USD $ 0.007-0.07/kg depending on the applied technology of production. The average self-cost of carrot production in Ukraine was USD $ 0.03/kg this season, according to AMP information.
