Black Sea countries will create laboratory network to control GMO products

Ukraine, Bulgaria, Romania, Russia and Turkey are to create laboratory network in the Black Sea region for analysis and control of GMO-containing foods. These laboratories will carry out independent examinations of GM products for imports and exports.

The idea of creating the laboratories belongs to the international organisation, entitled Black Sea Biotechnologies Association (which includes relevant institutions of the 5 countries).

Until now there have been no GMO laboratories in these countries, which made GMO products control very difficult.

The laboratory network in the Black Sea region will be a part of the all-European system, sponsored by the European Commission. According to European legislation, products containing GMO over 0.9 percent must have special marking on the package.

Black Sea Biotechnologies Association will create informational system for the consumers, including those from EU countries. The database will support characteristics and tests for GMO products.
