The issue of lifting moratorium for sale/purchase of farmland can be raised only after parliamentary elections of 2006 - VPM for agriculture

The issue of lifting the moratorium for sales and purchase of land, destined for agricultural usage, can be raised again not earlier than after the parliamentary elections of 2006, Ukraine's Deputy Prime Minister for Agriculture Ivan Kyrylenko said on November 18, commenting on Verkhovna Rada's overcoming the presidential veto for the law about extension of the moratorium till January 1, 2007.

Kyrylenko said that the issue was "extremely politicked". There is no sense in discussing it now.

"The people's votes are a too high price of speculations. Many of them are afraid now. They don't know what will happen if land will become a merchandise, in whose hands it will appear, whose peon the peasant can become", he said.

He said that the overcoming of the presidential veto for extension of the moratorium for farmland trade "conserves the problems of financial provision of farming industry development".

On November 18 Verkhovna Rada (Parliament of Ukraine) overcame the veto of President for the law "About Amendments to the Land Code of Ukraine". According to this law, the moratorium for sales of agricultural lands in Ukraine is prolonged until January 1, 2007.
