Fruit harvest in Crimea is under the threat of loss for the second year already

Specialists of AR Crimea - one of the leading fruit supplier on Ukrainian market - alert about the serious threat for fruit business of the region this year. Long warm period observed this winter on the Crimean peninsula may lead to practically complete loss of fruit harvest.

As Yegeniy Nikolayev, Chief of Plant Production Department of Crimean university of Agricultural Industry, said, warm weather may cause the blooming of fruit trees. "It might be that under intensive sunrays such "fast blooming" trees as apricot, peach, almond may be in a hurry to spring the buds", so thinks the specialist.

The farmers - Agricultural Marketing Project clients, who produce fruits in Crimea, are also worried by "too warm winter". They think that there is a great probability that after the warm winter early spring with abrupt temperature changes is coming. From the experience of several previous years everybody knows that it means the great losses of fruit harvest.

We'd remind that in spring 2004 frosts up to -17 C during the blooming period of fruit trees on the peninsula led to nearly complete loss of peach, apricot and some other fruit harvest; they also affected the table grape harvest.

The situation with orchards in Crimea has the direct influence on price formation on grape, peach and apricot markets; share of Crimea in the production volumes of the mentioned fruits is the greatest in Ukraine. Agricultural Marketing Project will follow-up the situation development and inform its clients.
