Odesa seaport shipped less grain and raw sugar in 2004
According to operative data of Odesa Trading Seaport, the volumes of tropical oils imported and transited through the port considerably increased in comparison with the year 2003 (46.2 percent up, to 153,000 tonnes).
At the same time in 2004 there was a notable shortage of transit grain (67% down, to 160,500 tonnes) and raw sugar (68% down to 602,000 tonnes). At the end of the year raw sugar cargoflow was almost absent. Among the reasons for the drop in cargoflow, the port administration cites the introduction of customs duty for transit cargoes, absence of quotas for raw sugar both in Ukraine and in Russia and high import tax in Ukraine. Nevertheless, the port administration hopes to restore the volumes of grain and raw sugar shipments up to the level of 2003 (near 1.8 million tonnes).
