The excessive supply of carrot is observed in Odessa

According to the information provided by Market Information Specialist of Odessa office, Agricultural Marketing Project (AMP), the vegetable producers of Odessa oblast report about the serious problems they face trying to sell carrot. The evaluations of AMP specialists prove that at this moment the volumes of stored carrot in the region excess significantly the level of the same period in the previous year; the demand on this commodity from the side of the wholesalers remains moderate.

Presently on Ukrainian markets the carrot is supplied on USD $ 0.08-0.11/kg, still some minor producers supply their commodities on USD $ 0.15/kg. The retail price on carrot on Odesa markets is within USD $ 0.15-0.18/kg.

According to the prognoses of vegetable production in 2004 prepared by the specialists of Agricultural Marketing Project, the carrot production growth rate in Odesa oblast was 35% - and 6% in total in Ukraine.

Just in the harvesting period it was reported that some farmers from the south of Odesa oblast decided not to harvest carrot cause wholesale price at that moment was lower USD $ 0.07/kg - to their opinion, this price was lower than the self-cost of the grown carrot.

It is interesting to mention that Odesa oblast, as a rule, does not produce enough carrot to cover the inner demand. The self-cost of this commodity production is higher in the oblast than in the other regions of Ukraine. The leaders of carrot supply in Ukraine are Volyn, Cherkasy and Rivne oblasts; Donetsk, Lugansk and Dnepropetrovsk oblasts have to purchase the largest volumes of this commodity
