The tomato export to Russia and Belarus results in price increase on this commodity
Today on the wholesale fruit and vegetable market "Farmer", Kyiv, the price on tomatoes grew on USD $ 0.29-0.39/kg and reached the level of USD $ 2.17-2.47/kg. As Anatoliy Yarovoy, the Price Monitoring Specialist of Agricultural Marketing Project, mentions, the demand on tomatoes is very large, this commodity is sold out very quickly even on this high price. The price growth on tomatoes is also observed in the other regions.
What was the reason for such rapid price increase? They were several. First of all, large greenhouse complexes are actively exporting tomatoes to Russia and Belarus. The tomato export was fostered by the low price on cucumbers in Ukraine, as the greenhouse complexes had found the purchasers of cucumber abroad and the tomato export goes on together with it. The second reason for the high price on tomatoes was the insufficient supply of this commodity because of the hampered harvesting season in the western regions, where the weather had been cold for a long time. Many greenhouse producers in Odesa oblast suffered from the recent hail. The seasonal demand on vegetables from the side of the population may be considered as third reason.
