It is difficult to buy carrot and red beets in Kyiv
As many Kyiv citizens noticed, it has become a problem to buy carrot and red beets on the city markets. Carrot is not offered for sale on many minor Kyiv markets. It is easier to find red beets, but the price on this commodity often exceeds USD $ 1.18/kg. As it was reported by the Price Monitoring Specialist of Agricultural Marketing Project, there are no supplies of the carrot of past year harvest on the wholesale market "Farmer" ("Troyeshchina", Kyiv). The same situation is with red beets.
Things are going on better in the supermarkets. The main carrot supplier to Kyiv supermarkets is "Agroholding" Joint-stock company (TM "Vovk-Morkovka"). The enterprise specialists confirmed a high demand on carrot, but proved that they are able to satisfy the supermarkets' demand till the moment of the mass supply of newly harvested carrot. The lack of carrot on market is explained here by the fact that many enterprises failed to store this commodity till the present moment.
The complicated supply of red beets and carrot of past year harvest whips up the prices on these early commodities. To this moment the wholesale price on early carrot starts from USD $ 1.48/kg, and it is sold in retail on USD $ 1.97-2.96/kg.
We'd note that previous year in the beginning of June carrot cost in retail USD $ 0.09-0.39/kg, red beets - USD $ 0.07-0.29/kg.
As the specialists think, such a high price on carrot can influence the producers' plans and encourage the carrot acreage extension this year.
