Ukraine: export cargoflow by railways grows

In May this year 434,500 tonnes of grains and derivatives was exported by Ukrainian railways, which is 2.4 times up compared to May last year, reports Ukrainian State Department of Railway Transport Ukrzaliznytsya.

Transit cargoflow of grains and derivatives by railway also increased to 123,600 tonnes in May 2005 from 35,600 tonnes in May 2004.

At the same time internal railway grain handling volumes declined 50% to 170,400 tonnes. Volume of import declined to 6,200 tonnes (-72%).

In may 2005 grains and derivatives handled by railway totalled 734,800 tonnes (+25% compared to May 2004).

In January-May 2005 Ukrainian railways handled 4.42 million tonnes of grains and products in total, which was 27.4% more than in the same period last year. The total volume includes 2.86 million tonnes of export (+162%), domestic shipments - 1.01 million tonnes (-34%), import - 28,700 tonnes (-93.5%), transit - 523,700 tonnes (+30%).
