In 2006 Veres plans increasing own cucumber plantings in Zakarpattya
Owned by Veres company, Mukachevo cannery plans to extend own cucumber acreage twice next year. In 2005, for the first time during several years the cannery has decided to produce vegetables for processing by own means; the experience seems to be successful.
The problem of cucumber and other vegetable supply is maybe the most severe for Zakarpattya canneries comparing to the other regions. More than dozen processing enterprises are working in the oblast, and for more of them cucumber is the basic raw material. Three more canneries started to work this year. Cucumber growers are not able to increase production so fast as the demand on this commodity grows. According to evaluations of the Agricultural Marketing Project the regional canneries have been able to fulfill only 40% of the purchase plans, they had to pay enormously much for cucumber. In this regard the enterprises have to take various measure on purpose to provide the processing capacities with such a valuable raw material. Some canneries purchase cucumber in the neighboring oblasts, some even imported cucumber from India; the others set up own farms for vegetable production.
