Vegetable prices jumped up today on Kyiv wholesale market
Prices on the majority of vegetables jumped up, according to today's price monitoring conducted on the Kyiv largest wholesale market Farmer, located in Troyeshchina residential area.
To the opinion of Anatoly Yarovoy, the Wholesale Price Monitoring Specialist of the Agricultural Marketing Project (AMP), price growth is associated not only with deteriorated weather conditions and abrupt temperature drop, but also by disadvantageous organization of wholesale trade in Kyiv, on Farmer market in particular. AMP specialists have noted several times that modern wholesale produce market is of exigency for Kyiv; due to its services Kyiv inhabitants could be annually provided with fresh fruits and vegetables on moderate prices. At present the majority of market trading points is occupied by intermediaries; they take an opportunity of too small market size and just buy and resell dearer fruits and vegetables transported by producers and wholesalers to Kyiv.
So, on Monday wholesale potato price rushed up to USD 0.28-0.3/kg (on Friday potato cost USD 0.18/kg). White cabbage costs now USD 0.24/kg (0.04/kg dearer), onion - USD 0.28/kg. Cucumbers grew expensive the most rapidly, as the supply shortened; the price jumped up to USD 1.2/kg; - and past Friday cucumbers can be bought here USD 0.68/kg. Greenhouse tomatoes grew 60% expensive up to USD 0.8-1.1/kg.
We'll point out that such significant price changes are characteristic for Kyiv most of all; as a rule, fruit and vegetable prices are changing smoothly on the other large wholesale markets of the country. That's why the Agricultural Marketing Project and Agrooglyad: Fruits and Vegetables journal plan to devote much attention to the produce wholesale trade development during the second international conference "Fruits and Vegetables of Ukraine 2005". Many leading experts have been invited to participate in the event; Polish and Ukrainian specialists will speak on fresh fruit and vegetable wholesale trade. Not less than 60 companies managing fruit and vegetable wholesale trade in CIS countries will take part in the conference.
