The sales season for Ukrainian greenhouse produce finishes
Greenhouse enterprises have practically finished selling cucumber and tomato which are the basic vegetables for the majority greenhouses. They evaluate this season as very successful; the steadily high prices let them get expected profits. Imported cucumber has been supplied to Ukrainian market for several weeks already, and imported tomatoes started to be sold actively as well. Traditionally, the main suppliers are Turkey, Greece, and Italy. Market players point out that imported produce influences price significantly. Price situation on market looks like it was past year much. Cucumber prices are higher 15-20% comparing to the same period of time in 2004, tomato prices are 7-10% lower. Today cucumbers cost USD 1.56-2.15/kg, tomatoes - USD 0.78-1.13/kg on Farmer wholesale market in Kyiv. It is interesting to mention that the highest cucumber price is observed for the products of Ukrainian origin, though the looks and packing are worse than imported cucumber. The flavor characteristics of imported products are also good, as a rule. The specialists explain this fact by a great commitment of Ukrainian consumers to national produce.
