Russia: bird flu registered in Astrakhan Oblast
According to Russia's Federal Service for Veterinary and Phyto-Sanitary Control (Rosselkhoznadzor), on November 14-21 two hundred dead swans were found in Volga's delta in Astrakhan Oblast of Russia (the region about 2,000 km south-east of Russia, close to Kazakhstan's border, in the estuary of Volga).
The tests, made in Central and Saratov Veterinary Laboratories on November 22, confirmed that the death of the birds was caused by H5 variety of bird flu virus, inflamed press-service of agriculture ministry.
Measures for prevention of the infection spread are said to have been imposed in the region. In particular, it has been banned to let the poultry out onto natural water reservoirs.
Apart from this case, as of November 22 there were four bird flu affected settlements in Russia, in Altai Krai, Kurgan, Cheliabinsk and Tambov Oblast each.
