Ukraine: bird flu virus detected in Crimea is deadly for humans (preliminary data)
According to preliminary results of the test, the bird flu virus detected in Ukraine is of the most dangerous type, i.e. the H5N1 strain, which can be fatal for humans. This was announced by ex-Chief Veterinary Inspector of Ukraine Petro Vebutsky to a news conference on Thursday, with reference to an information from Russian Institute for Animals Protection (the city of Vladimir), which he had received in a telephone conversation.
He said that Ukraine had sent the samples for testing to Russia on Monday, after Ukrainian central veterinary laboratory had confirmed the identity of H5 virus fund in the dead birds. Final results of the test from the Russian laboratory must be received on Friday, December 9.
Verbytsky said the samples would be also sent for testing to one of European laboratories (in the UK, Italy or Germany). "Since December 3 until now we have been preparing the materials for departure to a reference laboratory in Europe", he said.
