Bird flu affected area in Crimea expanding

On December 15 the works for localisation of bird flu infection in the affected zone of Crimea were underway. Ministry for Emergency Situations informed that during the period of December 3rd to 15th 59,162 heads of poultry had been culled in the quarantine zone, including Sovietsky, Jankoy and Nizhnegorsky Raions. By Friday morning the poultry owners had been refunded 1.226 million hryvnyas of damage (official dollar rate is 5.05 hryvnias per $1).

Meanwhile, the Ministry informed that as of Friday December 16 four new bird flu affected settlements had been registered, two located in each Sovietsky and Nizhnegorsky and the other two - in Chernomorsky Raion of the Crimea. Laboratories tests taken in those villages have shown presence of the bird flu virus.

According to the ministry's press-service, up to now the cases of bird flu disease have been confirmed in 15 settlements of the Crimea.
