Growing supply of Turkish tomatoes undercuts the prices on Ukrainian greenhouse commodities

According to the information provided to "Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits" journal by the Price Monitoring Specialists of the Agricultural Marketing Project, the supply growth of Turkish greenhouse tomatoes has being recently observed on Ukrainian market. The experts say that the prices go down on market, as Turkish tomatoes are sold in the low price segment despite of the fine quality, attractive look and good packing. For example, Turkish tomato supply has significantly increased on Kyiv FARMER wholesale produce market. This produce was mainly sold on $ 1.76/kg, so that the vendors had to decrease the price of the national greenhouse tomatoes on $0.1/kg in average (compared to the yesterday's price).

Ukrainian greenhouse enterprises inform that they can not get a planned price for their tomatoes exactly because of the severe competition from the side of Turkish tomato. As to the data of the Agricultural Marketing Project, today's prices on greenhouse tomatoes are approximately corresponding to the past year price level recorded in the same period of time. However, the share of the national greenhouse commodities is somewhat lower on the country market at the present moment compared to early April 2005.
