Poltava producers have finished sowing bulb onion

To the present moment Poltava oblast producers have practically finished sowing bulb onion, according to the information provided by the specialists of Poltava office, Agricultural Marketing Project to "Agrooglyad: Vegetables and Fruits" journal.

The favorable weather conditions let the farmers sow this crop in pretty short terms. However, many producers mention a week delay for the main vegetable crops sowing terms. The main reason is a slow soil warming and the excessive water content in it after winter time. The farmers plan to sow tomato soon, and the majority of white cabbage producers plan to sow the seeds after the Easter holidays.

The specialists of Poltava AMP office participated in onion demosite establishment at Nikolay Pustovit's farm called "Pustovit and Sons", Omelnik village, Kremenchuk rayon. Oleg Smolka, the AMP Agronomist, say about 20 different onion hybrids to be presented at this demosite. The hybrids were provided by such well-recognized seed companies as Clause, Nunhems, Bejo, Nickerson-Zwaan, Наско. This demosite assortment includes red and white onion hybrids which are unusual for the region. Nikolay Pustovit, the farm leader, points out that the regular wholesale clients usually eagerly buy different onion varieties in order to extend the assortment. He has personally been observing the demand for white and red onion to increase recently. The optimal share of white and red varieties is 12-15% from the total onion acreage. The production technology is the same, but these onion types are a little bit expensive. A successful marketing tool let the farm engage new buyers - small wholesalers and some shop chains of Kremenchug.
